A stunning tour de force of artisanship and bespoke design, every detail of this exquisite Southern French Renaissance-inspired offering, aptly titled La Bastide, was thoughtfully selected and crafted. Perched in the hills above Mulholland Drive with city and canyon views, an ivy-covered façade is adorned in 15th century hand-carved stone angel and gargoyle figures from France. Patinaed iron hardware and gothic crested windows recovered from 16th century structures across western Europe are complemented by the antique French shutters, front door and garage door’s whimsical splash of teal.
Once inside, one is instantly transported to decadent manors of the south of France as a magnificent 16th century marble staircase from a Spanish abbey anchors the entrance hall as the centerpiece surrounded by tromp l’oeil painted stone walls. Floors of black and white antique cabochons continue through the main floor common areas including living and dining rooms illuminated by an 18th century Baccarat chandelier with trompe l’oeil depicting pastoral scenes on walls and celestial skies on ceilings. A 15th century gothic archway leads to spacious chef’s kitchen featuring counters made of imported 18th century tiles, antique walnut cabinetry and a trompe l’oeil floral trellis ceiling motif.
Upstairs holds three bedrooms including a grand master with an en-suite salon showcasing a painted and gilded boiserie masterpiece on the walls and is decorated from floor to ceiling in imported European materials. The luxurious master bath with trompe l’oeil ceiling and walls includes a soaking tub as well as cabinets and shower doors done in gilded bronze Directoire style.
The upstairs library features painted trompe l’oeil books grillage and columns from a French chateau and a first empire transition Charles X chandelier.
A series of French doors with teal shutters open to a pool deck with ample space for lounging and al fresco dining as well as a terrace where breathtaking canyon and city to oceans views can be enjoyed year-round beside a 17th century stone fireplace.
From the elegant antique light fixtures and reclaimed hand-carved stone to the bespoke painted trompe l’oeil walls, every inch of La Bastide serves to preserve the integrity of its masterful French Renaissance construction and design.
