  • PREPARATIONS
    Make sure there are no power cables or any pipe work in the vicinity that can be damaged by the digging
    FILL THE UNDERGROUND BASIN
    I used plastic pallets. You can fill it with cobbles but this will be an expensive way and you need an even bigger hole to get the water volume you need.
    DIG
    Dig a BIG hole.
    The basin should hold at least twice the capacity-volume of water in the waterfall so it doesn’t empty when filling the fall.
    Multiply the WIDTH of the fall by the LENGTH times the maximum DEPTH times 7.5
    VAULT-FIT THE INSPECTION TUBE
    You need a vault to put your pump in — I used an old wheelie-bin. Removed the wheels, made holes in. I also wanted an inspection hole so I can check the water level. I used a piece of Downpipe with a lid. I drilled holes in it to let water flow easier and not create vacuum.
    LINING THE BASIN
    Preferably do this on a day when it’s not too windy.
    I lined the dug hole with some old carpet I got from a friend. I first thought this was going to be enough but then I read somewhere that it might rot eventually so I also lined it with some underliner. This protects the pondliner by reducing puncture or tears caused by stones and roots. And then I carefully put in the pondliner — no shoes.
    I used Flexiliner 3-ply pond liner which came with free underliner.
    I found the Flexiliner easy to line with, even in the corners and it also feels very hard wearing.
    LOADING THE BASIN
    I loaded the basin with plastic pallets. As they were used and had some sharp edges to them I put them on a couple of strips of polystyrene going long ways towards the vault so not to stop the water flow in the bottom of the basin. I lined the basin with polystyrene to stop the pallets getting into contact with the pondliner.
    INSPECTION TUBE
    I layered the top of the bin with polystyrene and one piece of hard board that I drilled holes in to let water come through. This was to allow the bin-lid to take the weight of stones and people stepping on it.
    PACK AROUND THE BASIN
    I folded back the liner and both underliners. Packed down around the edges as deep as I could with soil.
    PUMP
    To know what size pump to buy you need to know the fall height and how long it is between the vault and the water spillway. It is also good to know how wide, long and deep your fall is.
    I built a net-cage of some rope and put the pump in it. I had a qualified electrician to connect it to the mains.
    I connected the hose to it. I could tell that the water flow was too fast so built a flow regulator. Hose, T-piece and a valve to be able to control the water flow to what I wanted. This will, if open, let water out back in the vault letting less water pass up to the water spillway. I put the pump on top of a couple of bricks to save it from standing in mud (eventually).
    WATERSPILLWAY
    I had to make my own water spillway. Stacking bin, a liner connector and some Adseal (they do not recommend Silicon for this kind of stuff). The hole where the water enters the water spillway should be under water level but as shallow as possible. About 5 cm under the line where the water will spills out is good. Place the water spillway. Important it is perfectly level.
    HOSE
    Made a hole in the liner and pulled it over the Liner connector. This needs to be done before the hose is connected to the connector.
    FILL THE BASIN
    Instant Problem, the water lifted everything. I had to put big stones on top of the plastic pallets and the polystyrene to keep them in place
    I now covered the basin with a green mesh to keep gravel and little stones from falling through to the bottom of the basin and to let water through. Cover with gravel to keep it from being lifted. I rinsed all gravel and stones before I put them on the basin to stop a lot of dust and sand sinking to the bottom and later on causing problem with the pump. Save about 30 cm of liner when cutting. Also making sure I saved as much liner as possible where the fall was coming up.
    BUILD UP THE FALL
    Build up levels. Important to get it level, as if you don’t the water will only fall in one end of the fall.
    LINE THE FALL
    Underlining the fall. Then, starting from below, put in the liner. If you have several liners you have to start from below and make big overlaps.
    LINER-WATERSPILLWAY
    Folded the liner over the edge of the water-spillway. Using Adseal to fix it to the inside, Also later used expanded foam to really stop possibilities for the water to seep through underneath the liner and out in the ground.
    STONES IN THE FALL
    Put rocks in the fall.Back-fill underneath the underliner to make the sides of the fall high enough to stop water flowing over.
    SPILLSTONES
    I didn’t have enough flat stones so I decided to make my own spill stones.
    FOAMING
    Used black expanding foam to fill where there is a risk that water would pour underneath rocks instead of over.
    TRY-RUN
    Let foam set over night and then try-run the fall.
