Don’t you just hate it when the tools you can buy at the store are not good enough, inefficient or cumbersome to use? I searched long for a sanding tool that would form itself around carvings and knock the fuzzies and splinters of while retaining the the coarse ‘chainsaw look’, without resorting to labor intensive sanding.. Regular flap wheels for drills are to stiff and to darn small to be of any use, and the ones for angle grinders are rubbish because they have the above problems, ánd burn the wood.
So, time to make your own. I got this idea from someone else and it seemed just perfect for chainsaw carving. Watch the video how I make one out of sanding belts.
NOTE 1. I bought 10 belts, which is enough to make three flap wheels (Around 15 strips on each wheel).
NOTE 2. It a massive amount of cutting, so better spread it out over a few days so not to lose your sanity.
NOTE 3. Use protective goggles, chips of wood fly off fast.
NOTE 4. This wheel is rather big, so best used on large carvings. For smaller ones, reduce wheel size to get into the tight spots more efficiently.
Experience after use:
It works great, and very quickly. However, because of the ‘soft surface’ it’s not really a tool for removing large amounts of wood, but solely for quickly making chainsaw carvings presentable, and sellable within minutes.
I thought of making another one in a finer grit, but in hindsight that’s unnecessary. 80 grit is good enough to make it smooth.
Also the fiber backing of the belts prevent any pieces breaking off, so wear is reduced greatly.
