Today we have a bit of a discussion focusing on what, at least I, consider more important when it comes to the materials we use with orchids.
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
To make a general idea, the materials we use with orchids have minimal importance, from the point of view of what they actually are. It’s extremely unimportant what the current main use for a material is, but rather the effect that it has if used in a different way.
Therefore, things that are normally used in house construction or pottery (seramis, leca and clay materials), textiles normally used for house cleaning or clothes (microfiber, synthic) and materials used for insulation (mineral wool) have all found their place in orchid growing and brought some growers more than they might have imagined, success wise.
Thinking about what the primary purpose of the material is takes away from thinking about the effects and advantages it has, thus minimizing the possibility to grow orchids in an easier manner, or even in a more optimum manner.
Thinking about how they normally grow in nature is not wrong, but it’s not right either, if we ignore their nature of being litophytes, or epiphytes. Many times we copy what we should not copy, exactly what is not important: the tree and the rock, the 2 things that are of the most minimal importance to an orchid, strictly development wise. Trees and rocks have their purpose, they maintain the orchid anchored, ventilated and above soil and water… simply because there is no other structure in nature that can be tall, strong long term and above soil and water.
In the end, experience and long term experiments (ours or others) have proven to be more valuable than opinions, thought strictness and.. well stubbornness. There will always be materials and setups that are not ideal, or downright damaging, not because of the components, but because of their effects and a lack of understanding orchid nature (NOT natural). Even free thinking needs to base itself on something logical.
Anything can be controlled with a bit of prior thinking, we don’t need to bring the trees and rocks in our homes to be acknowledged, awarded and even obtain fame for our research and results.
