Repairing UV damage on a plastic/PVC garden shed roof.
This is a Suncast 7′x10″ (2.33m x 3.05m) PVC garden shed I installed about 6 or 7 years ago. It has worked fine over the years, but about 2 years ago, I noticed some cracks starting to form in the translucent white plastic along the peak of the roof. That was a design feature to allow sun light to light up the inside of the shed during the day.
Nice concept, but clear plastic exposed to 10+ hrs/day of sunlight won’t stand up for very long. About a year ago, the cracks grew larger and chunks of plastic started breaking off. The plastic would just crumble into white powder between my fingers.
So my first repair attempt was to use some aluminum flashing and some butyl rubber/aluminum roofing tape to cover the plastic. That held up one winter, but the summer sun worked the tape loose and the wind got under it and that was that.
For round two I used some Henry rubberized roofing cement and fiberglass repair mesh to cover the area where the translucent plastic used to be. Over that, I formed a strip of 6″ aluminum flashing to fit the peak of the roof. That in turn was covered with 2 more layers of fiberglass mesh embedding in roofing cement.
After curing for 4 weeks, I top coated the whole roof with 2 coats of Henry Solar Flex white roof coating per the directions. That should seal up the patched area and also protect the rest of the roof from further UV damage.
I’ve used this roof paint before and it seems to last a long time. When it does start to degrade, you just roll on another coat and over time, the thickness builds up. The white coating also helps reduce the temperatures inside the shed during the day.
