Benjamin Moore’s Advance “Waterborne Interior Alkyd” Satin is a great product when you want a smooth and rather shiny finish on woodwork, cabinets, doors, and furniture.
This product is a self-leveling hybrid enamel that flows quite a bit. You can’t spray or brush the product on too heavy or it will continue to flow and cause “sags”. The flowy characteristics and long open time are due to it being alkyd molecules encapsulated in acrylic molecule structures.
If you are looking for a fancy shine on your project this product is perfect, although if you are trying to hide anything such as imperfections on older surfaces or roughness in prep work, a less shiny and oil-like finish would be recommended.
Advance can be applied with a velour mini roller as well as a foam roller, brush, or spray. With each method, some experience or test sampling is recommended. whichever application technique you use, the surface to be painted has to be very clean of surface dust, contaminants, etc, and have all flaws fixed by using fillers and caulking, and cleaning between steps.
When in doubt, “Priming makes everything better.” So make sure your Advance can get good adhesion. It will not do well over raw prep work like wood fillers, and surfaces with grease or high gloss and unsanded.
Strainer bags are recommended to strain the paint before spraying, or if you are brushing and there is any chance that dirt, hair, or debris might have gotten into the paint pot.
This was a bathroom remodel and I primed the walls and ceiling as necessary but didn’t require priming the door. Mostly because I machine sanded everything and cleaned it well, and spot primed the prep work.
