Unfinished molding can be found at home improvement centers in a wide variety of styles. Molding is generally sold by the foot and often made from pine. Because molding is made of pine it may oftentimes turn blotchy when stained. To avoid this, first apply a coat of wood conditioner. Brush on the wood conditioner and let it soak in for 15 minutes. Next apply your stain, either with a foam brush or a rag. Allow the stain to soak in for about five minutes and finish by wiping off any stain that doesn’t absorb. Let the stain dry overnight or for about eight hours before brushing on the final protective coat of Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane.
When it comes time to cut and install your moldings, all you need is an inexpensive miter box and a fine-tooth saw. For attaching molding to the wall, use a hammer, some finish nails, and a nail punch.
The two most common moldings you will find in your home improvement center are the baseboard and the shoe molding. The baseboard hides the bottom edge of your dry wall. The shoe mold is used to disguise that ragged edge of carpeting or unfinished flooring.
If you want to go that extra step, consider putting wainscoting on the wall. Wainscoting panels are usually cut to lengths from 36 to 42 inches. Always make sure you stain these first because they are made of tongue and groove pine. In the winter, when the room gets dry, the wood tends to shrink a bit. An even coat of stain will ensure that this minor shrinkage will not unveil an unstained strip of wood.
Across the top of your wainscoting, attach a piece of chair rail molding. Chair rail molding is specially notched to fit over the top of the wainscoting to disguise the cut edge. When you are finished installing, apply tinted wood putty to hide any nail heads. Finish by brushing on your last coat of Fast-Drying Polyurethane.
