Build the Holoprojector cone for R2D2 with a mouthwash cap and hobby styrene strips, putty, and plastic cement.
Ari, of http://buildanr2d2.com, shows you step by step how to build an R2D2 holoprojector. This first video is about the cap. You will need a mouthwash cap, styrene strips (found in hobby stores that cater to Model Trains), Bondo and contour putty as materials. A hacksaw or dremel, with plastic cutting discs and sanding wheel, blue painters tape, plastic cement, a ruler that measures in 1/32″, and a pencil.
Use the pencil and mark the cap 23/32″ from the bottom, all the way around the cap. Use the tape just above that line to account for the thickness of the blade, or mark that ahead of time instead of the 23/32″. Cut the cap at that mark. Sand the top portion that was cut so it lays flat to your liking. Mark lines on the inside and place a .030 x .100 styrene strip at the bottom of that line using the plastic cement. Place another strip that is .010 X .030 at the top of the cap, about 1/32″ down with cement as well. Mix a small amount of Bondo, and use a small homemade flat edged tool that fits inside the cap, to go all the way around the inside between the two strips making is smooth. If any Bondo gets on the top above the smaller styrene strip, this will be ok. It gets coated as well just a little bit.
Use the contour putty and apply to the grooves of the mouthwash cap. Let this dry for an hour. Sand it down. Repeat the process until you are left a perfectly smooth outside that matches the flat spot in the mouthwash cap and on the inside too. Mark the cap in 4 even quadrants, and place the .010 x .030 styrene strips on the 4 quadrants using the cement. cut off the excess each time. Depending on how you “new” you want the cap to look depends on how long you wait to cut the strips and how careful you are with the cement. Find the middle of these four quadrants and place four more strips down and repeat this process going in the middle, between each set of strips until there is a total of 32 strips. This means going 4,4,8, and finally 16 times around. once this is complete, we will make a Base for the cap and an inner ball for the cap to rest on.
