  • In this video we will show you some of the steps required to reupholster a back-to-back lounge recliner seat. This type of seat is used as the helm seat in Brian’s 1982 Regal 245 XL Ambassador. Sailrite’s project boat for 2016. As often is the case the wooden base and the backer boards of the old seat are rotted and in need of replacing. Brian will remove the seat from the boat, remove the old vinyl and use the old rotted wood as a template to make a wooden base and backer boards. He will then assemble the new base and prep the backer boards for re-upholstery. We will not be showing Brian doing that, but rather will highlight the reupholstering of the base and the seats using supplies from Sailrite.

This video is to bring you a closer look at the Pemko 220APK. This is a mill aluminum door shoe with a Pemko Prene insert. So the 220 is representative of the profile of this aluminum u shaped door bottom. The A in the part number means that this is a milled aluminum finish and the PK means that the insert is Pemko Prene, which is a much higher performance sort of seal material when compared to vinyl. The 220 is relatively uncommon to sell for us because we are primarily more focused on commercial sorts of openings meaning this is for an 1-3/8″ door. Now where you are going to use this not uncommonly is a residential application. I’ve seen plenty of attached garages or doors solid wood 1-3/8″ wood doors that go out to a sunroom in the back of a home which is really not heated or there is no HVAC going into it so in the winter and summer you need to weatherstrip that door. An 1-3/8″ is not unheard of in those installations. You might even have a door on the inside that you simply need to seal for maybe sound purposes. There are such things as 1-3/8″ fire rated metal doors and this can be commonly used for that as well. There is an image below this video showing the important dimensional properties and you can see from that image the face with the screw, lets say the exterior face, is an 1-1/8″. On the opposite side is 5/8″ on the aluminum. Really the important dimension however to know is the bottom of the extrusion down to the bottom of the insert and that is 1/2″. That is what you have to know. What are you dealing with in terms of undercut. Will you be able to fit this? Is it too tight? Is it not tall enough? You do have some slotted holes to help compensate for that and we can get to that in a moment. This is going to be available in the D finish for dark bronze, it is available in the G finish for gold. You can also do this with a vinyl insert and I would not recommend that at all, unless you were doing so many openings that the cost difference between Pemko Prene and vinyl which is slight adds up to such a substantial number that you are required to go with vinyl. Vinyl is terrible with extreme temperatures, exposures to ultraviolet light. Pemko Prene is a far superior material for that sort of exposure. So Pemko Prene, PK would be the way to go with this. This is available not only in those different finishes, but different lengths as well. If you have need for a custom length, by all means let us know by ordering the next longest piece or pieces and simply indicate in the comment field what length you would like for us to cut the material back to. The reasoning is this. This is a 3′ piece. If you had to cut it back to say 32″, you would eliminate that slotted hole that is there and the next one is all of the way over here. Now the slotted hole is crucial to have for a number of reasons. Not every sill is level, not every frame is plumb, not every jamb is perfectly situated, and not every door is cut straight on the bottom. Also when you are pre-drilling the holes for the screws and you may have seen those slide out on us, are included. The drill bit has a tendency to walk a little bit before it pierces in whether you are drilling into wood, steel, fiberglass, stainless, bronze, aluminum if you have not used a center punch. So that slotted hole will help compensate for a miss drilled hole as well and it is going to help tailor the exact fit on the door because you don’t want this so tight that you really have to pull the door closed where it doesn’t work at all or you really don’t want it missing the sill because it is equivalent to no weatherstripping at all. Any way, if you order a custom length we will not only cut it to the proper length, but give you those countersinks at the proper distance from the edge and the proper center to center as well. Now it is not a problem drilling the hole obviously but a little more of a challenge to drill a slotted hole. There you go, you know how to approach a custom length should you need it. The name Pemko is synonymous with weatherstripping, not only door bottoms like this but thresholds, perimeter gasketing, material made of aluminum like this, stainless steel, architectural bronze. There is a link below this video to the manufacturer’s page where you can begin to filter through a random assembly of Pemko items that we sell but also a link to their product catalog which is a very handy document. If you have more than an occasional need for weatherstripping by all means familiarize yourself with the Pemko catalog because they as a manufacturer represent the broadest spectrum of available materials from a single source. If you have any questions on the Pemko 220APK door bottom for 1-3/8″ thick door or any other Pemko product, please feel free to reach out to us. Thank you.
