Staining pressure treated wood can be a real chore.
Hi Friend, this is Jeff from Home Repair Tutor and this tutorial is meant to help you with your own staining project. Specifically one that involves pressure treated wood that’s seen better days.
The retaining wall in this video is over 10 years old. It’s still in great shape. And I want to help it stay in good shape for years to come.
So I decided to use Olympic Elite Stain/Woodland Oil. I used it because it seemed more durable than other wood coatings. Plus, I was told that if it fades all I’d have to do is reapply it, not STRIP it.
STRIPPING stains sucks.
I wanted to avoid that mess. I’ll keep you posted on the durability of the oil stain.
Before you stain your pressure treated wood make sure it doesn’t bead water. Beading water indicates the wood won’t absorb the new stain. Since the pressure treated wood in this video is 10 years old it happily accepted the oil.
Clean your wood with a pressure washer or chemical cleaner. Let it dry thoroughly. Press a nail into the wood and if water comes out you know it’s not dry enough.
Protect other surfaces with drop cloths or 3 mil plastic. Then brush on the Olympic Elite with a Purdy brush specifically meant for oil based products (I’ll show the one I used).
