All week long I’ve been planning and researching hydroponic gardens and have decided on a dual approach to a conventional method using 4 inch sewer pipe. I got an early start Saturday to check on some computers and servers at work and then made my way to the lumberyard to pick up supplies which led to this video instead of going fishing! ( I did stop by Lake Bryan to check on the crappie… nothing yet!)
Normally with pipes a consistent trickle of water is used by pumping water uphill from a reservoir and letting gravity bring it back down through the pipes.
Another common practice is to use shallow trays as grow beds filled with grow material in place of soil where periodic flood cycles feed the plants like a tidal action rising and falling several times a day. The Bell siphon is one device that makes the tidal action possible in the shallow growing trays of a hydroponic system.
In the pipe method, a growing medium like Perlite is not normally used but I like to do things differently so I am designing a pipe system that uses both the Perlite and the Bell siphon to induce a flood cycle.
Most likely I’ll convert to Aquaponics before to long and raise some catfish too but I’ve got to make the holding tank first!
For the first Saturday in a long while the weather was kind of crappy making it into the low 50′s and raining more as the day wore on. We need the rain so I won’t complain but it did chase me back inside by mid afternoon so I made this video.
