Blood and Ink: A Comic Book History of Mexico
Christopher Conway is associate professor of Spanish and chair of the department of Modern Languages at The University of Texas at Arlington where he is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. Recipient of the state-wide UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, Conway’s current research focuses on Spanish language comic books, pulp fiction, and films.
A prolific author, Conway’s writings highlight his passion for cultural history, anecdote, everyday life, and nationalism in Latin America. His forthcoming book, Nineteenth-Century Spanish America: A Cultural History (2015), is a panoramic and evocative telling of the leisure activities, entertainments, and values of the varied peoples of Latin America. He is also the author of The Cult of Bolívar in Latin American Literature (2003) and editor of Peruvian Traditions (2004) and the U.S. Mexican War: A Binational Reader (2010).
Conway’s Athenaeum presentation on Mexican comic books grows out of his passion for vintage Mexican comics. His personal collection includes over 300 comics and is particularly strong in the area of nationalist comics about Mexican history and westerns (“Mexiwesterns”).
