A quick how-to demonstration on using your router to cut shelf supports; filmed by me as part of a Home DIY Project for making DVD shelving units.
Although the router is frequently used in DIY projects I don’t use it often enough for this type of task for it to be second nature therefore I spend more time making the calculations, and where beneficial making a jig, than I do in using the router.
Therefore, if you are like me it pays to make a practice run on scrap wood first to test your calculations and that any jig you made works in the way intended. Normally at least two clamps should be used; however where this is not practical one clamp may hold the wood securely for short sections provided it is firmly tight, if not then the work will need supporting by other means. And for good routing, don’t run with your tools; take you time and do a good proper job.
New floorboards were used for this project as an ideal timber for making strong and sturdy shelving. After hewing the edges of the timber with a jig saw the shelves are cleaned and coloured with two coats of wood stain before final fit to use for storage of DVDs and CDs, although this shelving unit would be just as suitable as a paperback bookcase.
