In this video I am making a simple box in plywood and walnut with splined miter joints.
First I cust some strips in plywood then I use my guillotine miter cutter which is actually for making frames but it is also perfect for making small to medium sized boxes too. And best of all, it’s totally dust free.
When I have cut the four side sheets with the guillotine cutter I simply make a groove in the plywood sheets on the table saw. This is for inserting the bottom plate.
Once the box is all glued up and dry I make the lid which simply is a plywood sheet as well. I cut it to the size of the box but I want to make the edges a little prettier so I cut in thin walnut strips on the table saw.
I am going to glue the strips on the lid edges but I need to cut the lid a little smaller to make it fit perfectly. This is done by adjusting the table saw to the width of the strips and then trim the four sides on the lid.
Now I can glue the strips to the edge of the lid and the it is done.
I am using a 45 degree jig and make the spline cuts on the box. The next step is to glue the splines and trim them with a flush trim router bit.
Now I can attach the hinges and do a quick flush trim around the lid to make it match the box perfectly.
Final step is to do a little sanding and spray on some spray varnish. When the varnish is dry I simply use som paper to rub out dust and knots in the varnish.
