Palestinian youths took to the streets of the Gaza Strip on Sunday, clashing with Israeli army troops at Netzarin Junction, where a 12 year old Palestinian boy was killed on Saturday by Israeli gunfire.
The youths threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at the soldiers, who fired back with guns in response.
There are signs of heavy security operations all over Israel as the violence looks set to continue.
In the village of Jabil Mukaber, near Jerusalem, youths throw stones at Israeli security forces.
On this occasion, soldiers dispersed the crowd and chased them through the streets but did not respond with either tear gas or rubber bullets.
On Saturday a 12-year-old boy was killed by Israeli gunfire.
His death, caught on television camera, has shocked the world.
But the confrontations resumed on Sunday morning, after a Saturday-night phone conversation between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat failed to ease tensions.
In Jerusalem, itself, security is heavy with Israeli police and soldiers out on the streets in force.
At Damascus Gate in the Old City soldiers gathered in groups on standby to contain any further outbreaks of the violence that has scarred the country for the past four days.
Shops in predominantly Arab East Jerusalem remained closed as owners responded to the call from the Palestinian Authority for a general strike.
Shops and schools in the West Bank started the strike on Saturday.
Now Arab communities inside Israel are striking, as well, in a show of solidarity.
At the Gilot checkpoint south of the city, the main cross point between Jerusalem and Bethlehem, soldiers were stopping and checking cars and preventing Israelis crossing into Palestinian Authority territory.
A total of 18 Palestinians have been killed in the rioting, and about 700 injured, according to Palestinian officials.
Israel says 11 members of the security forces have been wounded.
In several tense areas, funerals for the Palestinians were planned on Sunday, and large crowds were expected.
The trouble broke out on Thursday during a visit by Israel’s hard-line opposition leader, Ariel Sharon, to a bitterly contested Jerusalem shrine sacred to Muslims and Jews.
Sharon said he toured the compound to show Israel was in control there.
Palestinians say the riots are a spontaneous response to visit to the disputed hilltop known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram as-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary.
Despite the relative calm in other areas, the Gaza Strip looks like it will be the scene of more violence on Sunday.
From early in the morning, Palestinian youths gathered outside the Israeli Army base in Netzarin continued their campaign of throwing stones and molotov cocktails into the compound.
Palestinian soldiers were on patrol nearby, but there seemed to be no attempt to stop the stone throwing.
Palestinians outside the army camp cheered as they heard explosions – the results of the molotov cocktails – from within.
